A total of 72 projects, from 22 institutions distributed over 13 countries of Africa, Europe and North America, were submitted to the first stage of ABEC Design Competition. The UBORA design competition 2018, announced during the closing ceremony of the UBORA design school in Nairobi, officially started in the first days of January.
The competition seeks innovative biomedical engineering solutions from students (individuals or teams) addressing healthcare problems faced by the ageing society promoting Healthy Ageing, enabling individuals to live both longer and healthier lives, or can be used in treatments of age-related diseases, syndromes, and disabilities. For the best-ranked projects, travel from the university town to Pisa and back and full-board will be provided for one team member to attend UBORA Design School 2018 to be held at University of Pisa (Pisa – Italy) from 3rd to 7th September 2018. Specific places are reserved for students of ABEC partners. The first stage deadline is on March 1st 1st: you can find all the information here. The Innovators’ Summer School (ISS) is an initiative of UNECA (United Nations Economic Commission for Africa), and annually organized by ABEC. The ISS 2015 programme will focus on building the technical skills of students from 13 African universities on the application of mobile telephony in the design of medical devices. At the end of the programme, students and researchers would have been empowered with modern critical skills and techniques on how to enable smartphone to serve as a life-saving medical device.
Smartphones are multi-use multi-capability devices that are increasingly affordable, and have been used in Africa to promote financial inclusion. Mobile phones present enormous possibilities in the healthcare sector in terms of connectivity, visualization, sensors, storage, etc.

The call for ideas for the next design school are on-line! The Design School will be held at Kenyatta University from 23rd to 27 October 2017. This year the contest is an integral part of the UBORA Eu Project, and is open to students from ABEC members and UBORA consortium. The abstract must be submitted before 8th of April 2017, and must be focused on reducing child mortality. For the 24 best-ranked projects travel and full-board will be provided for one team member to attend the Design School.
