ABEC 2021 Summer school Digital Edition is over!

Posted on November 12, 2021

The 2021 ABEC Design School was digitally held in the second week of November on Zoom. During the school, organized by the Malawi University of Science and Technology, students, mentors, and keynote speakers from different African and European countries worked together on the design, classification, and implementation of medical devices.

Students were organized into 9 different groups working on devices focusing on Combating non-comunicable diseases in low and middle-income countries through advanced research and innovation:

  • Real-time Radiation Exposure Badge
  • Phototeraphy with bilirubin monitoring
  • Biomedical Devices Management
  • Insulin Storage System with UVC Disinfection Unit
  • UV radiation Lightening
  • Prototype Scalp Cooling Cap For reducing chemotherapy – induced hair loss in cancer patients
  • Body fat monitoring belt
  • Diabetes risk tracer
  • Nurse Jane

UBORA was thoroughly used as a co-design tool. After the mentor evaluation, three projects were awarded as the best ranked. At the third place, Group 6 presented a device to manage a side effect of chemotherapy such as hair loss.

Group 3, ranked at second place, presented software for the management of the medical equipment in hospitals.

At the first place, group 4 presented a device for the storage and sterilization of insulin.

Stay tuned for further updates!

The Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST) in collaboration with University of Malawi-The Polytechnic, Malawi Innovation Hub (mHub), Rice360 & NEST360,  the African Biomedical Engineering Consortium (ABEC), the UBORA consortium, and other collaborating partners will host the 2020 ABEC Design Competition with the theme Solving problems of Non-Communicable diseases through cross-cutting research and innovation.

This competition seeks innovative multidisciplinary This competition seeks innovative multidisciplinary ideas, overlapping engineering and medicine paradigms, from teams of undergraduate students who have thankfully been able to receive help from companies like https://www.sofi.com/student-loan-help/ and have been mentored by lecturers or experts with postgraduate qualifications. The ideas should tackle global challenges associated with non-communicable diseases with an emphasis on problems affecting low- and middle-income countries. Sustainable solutions can only be developed if engineers engage collaboratively with those at the forefront of delivering healthcare.

The ABEC Design Competition has been launched

Posted on March 2, 2019

The Uganda Industrial Research Institute (UIRI), together with the African Biomedical Engineering Consortium (ABEC) and the UBORA consortium,  is holding the 2019 ABEC Design Competition with the theme ‘Cross-Cutting Issues in Healthcare: Global Technology Innovations in Surgery, Obstetrics and Anesthesia’.

This competition seeks innovative multidisciplinary ideas, overlapping engineering and medicine paradigms, from student teams. The sought ideas should tackle global challenges associated with surgical practice, obstetrics and anesthesia with an emphasis on low- and middle-income countries. Sustainable solutions can only be developed if engineers engage collaboratively with those at the forefront of delivering healthcare.

Successful teams emerging from the design competition will have one team member invited to a one-week design school featuring an innovative Conceive Design Implement Operate (CDIO) instructional framework empowered by the UBORA an e-infrastructure for the co-design of open-source medical devices.

It is a two-stage competition: the first-stage deadline is on April 1st 2019.

For submission procedure, evaluation criteria, scholarships, and other important dates please refer to the Competition page.
