Brief description
The department was established in 1986, to train Medical equipment technologist, as a collaboration venture between the Kenyan Government, through Ministry of Health (MOH), the Ministry of Research Technical Training and Applied Technology (MRTTAT) and was aided by the German Government through the German Technical Assistance Agency (GTZ). By then, hospital equipment was breaking down due to lack of proper maintenance, rendering 70% of the equipment nonfunctional.
The physical facilities of the department consist of three (3) class rooms and nine (9) training laboratories. The goal of Medical Engineering Departmental is to produce graduates who are ready to hardly take up constructive roles in the Society, Continuous development in engineering jobs in Medical Engineering and Research Bodies or Prepared to continue learning throughout their lives.
The department is currently offering two degree program; Bachelor of Science in Medical Engineering (BSc.) and Bachelor of Technology in Medical Engineering (Btech).
Bachelor of Science in Medical Engineering (BSc) is a five year programme with the following options;
- Clinical Engineering Option.
- Hospital Engineering Option.
Besides the degree program, the department also offers Diploma in Technology (Medical Engineering), Diploma in Refrigeration and Air-Conditioning and a Certificate in Medical Engineering Services (CMES).
